Founder
Padmabushan Dr. Alagappa Chettiar was a great Philanthropist, eminent educationist and a multi faced versatile personality. Born in 6th April of 1909 as second son of Shri K. V. AL. Ramanathan Chettiar and Umayal Achi at Kottaiyur of Sivagangai District, In Tamilnadu.The Alagappa University was established in 1985 fulfilling the dream of Dr. Alagappa. Alagappa Educational instituitions is providing a continuum in education for children of the community to start from kindergarten and pursue studies right up to post doctoral studies in a wide array of subjects.
To bring prominence to the educational institutions he had the vision to convince Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to house one of the Government's National Research Institutes in the heart of the Alagappa campus. Dr. Radhakrishnan, the Vice President of India surmised at the opening of the Central Electro Chemical Research Institute (CECRI) on 14 Jan 1953. " The magnificent gift of 300 acres of land 1.5 million of Rupees by Dr. Alagappa Chettiar helped the Government of India to select Karaikudi as the seat of Electro Chemical Research Institute. Dr. Alagappa Chettiar is one how can give to good cause, cultivate courage and emulate the spirit.
Alagappa University
Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu, India in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. The 440 acre green and lush campus houses all the academic activities. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The University has 45 Departments, 5 Centres and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus. 45 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram are part of the University. Excellence in Action is the motto of the university.
Acolades of Alagappa University
Alagappa University obtained A+ Grade with CGPA of 3.64 grading by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Alagappa University is the first State University in Tamil Nadu to obtain the A+ grade and obtained Category–I status by the MHRD-UGC and occupies 2nd place out of 12 State Universities with Category-I Status in the Country. It is the only State University in Tamil Nadu obtained the Category-I Status. Secured 30th position among Universities in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2023 ranking. The University is graded in 251 – 260th bandwidth in QS Asia Ranking (2023). Further, it has been placed in 111th Rank in Times Higher Education ASIA assessment (2023) and placed in the bandwidth of 601 – 800th band in Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings(2024) based on its impressive performance in Academic, Research and Extension activities.
The University offers education through Regular, Week-end, Distance and Collaborative modes. Through all modes of education, the University caters to the needs of the student community of around 1.12 lakhs. Alagappa University offers a wide range of services and resources, including publications, conferences, educational programs, and online platforms, to support the growth and development of these fields.
The University is having International Collaborations with Universities / Institutions of Higher Learning in countries like U.S.A, UK, Australia, Singapore, China, Malaysia and South Korea. Innovative programmes are designed and offered at the University for the foreign students. 41 international exchange programmes attract the attention of the teachers and students from abroad.
Department of Computer Science
The Department of Computer Science has been established in the Academic year 2016-2017. It offers Post Graduate Programmes M.Sc Computer Science(2 years), M.Sc. Cyber Forensics (2 years), M.Phil Computer Science (1 year) and Ph.D. Computer Science Full-Time and Part-Time.
The Department is having academic team of well experienced faculty members with research aptitude and expertise in Data Mining, Information / Network Security, Communication Networks, Databases, Algorithms, Image / Video Processing, Cloud Computing, Big Data, Software Engineering, Operation Research, Mathematical Algorithms, Wireless Communications, Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Semantic Web & Software Development.
The department organize conferences and workshops that provide opportunities for researchers, professionals, and students to present their work, exchange ideas, and engage in discussions on the latest advancements in technology and information management.
ALUJC Journal
The "Alagappa University Journal of Computing (ALUJC)" is a unique quarterly in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology launched during the academic year 2020. It seeks to disseminate advanced information with the aim of building insights and enabling individual as well as collective advancements in research.
The editorial board is an august body of eminent personalities from prominent institutions in India, abroad, and Industry. This journal is a platform to exhibit the skills of research scholars, teaching faculty, industrialists and professionals, and publish their research work. It enables them to get acquainted with the various resources in the field.
